For many young people desperately looking for accommodation and safety...
Brisbane is
Not For Rent
Our youth workers are seeing unprecedented levels of people seeking urgent help, and we are struggling to meet the surge in demand.
YOU can help a young person in need. Donate today to provide urgent supports and/or crisis relief for a young person facing a night on the streets.

Sleeping rough puts young people at risk of further violence and trauma
Emma's* Story
"I was 15 years old when I left home to escape family violence and isolation. I didn’t have anyone I could go to, so I came to Brisbane and found myself homeless and sleeping on the streets. There were nights when I slept on a chair in Southbank or passed the time in places like 24-hour McDonald’s just to feel safer.
I was cold, uncomfortable, and scared. It was dangerous and I’d stay awake waiting for the sun to come up, just so it would be a new day and I could, hopefully, find a better place to sleep the next night.
I now have a stable place to stay where I feel safe and supported. BYS are helping me while I’m studying at TAFE and looking for a part-time job. I’m also learning to drive and recently passed my citizenship test.
Without BYS’s support, I wouldn’t be where I am today. There were times where I wanted to give up and not be here anymore.
Things are so much better now. I have hope for the future and goals I want to achieve – find a job, go to university, and move out into my own place. I just want a normal life, to travel, make lots of friends, and live with no regrets.
*At Brisbane Youth Service, we respect everyone who comes to us for help, and many are working toward a fresh start in life. So, while their quotes and stories are true, client names, ages, and images have been changed to protect their privacy. Thank you for your understanding and ongoing support.
About Brisbane Youth Service
We provide free, confidential services including crisis and transitional housing, emergency relief, physical and mental health services, alcohol and drug interventions, domestic and family violence support, and specialist programs for young women and young families.
We meet young people at a crucial time of great need – but also a great opportunity for early intervention supports.
As a community, if we want to break the cycle of homelessness we must ensure young people can access crucial services when they need them. Even with brief support from BYS, most young people can overcome difficulties, move out of crisis, and achieve life goals.

"I came from a broken home and
was living on the streets at the age
of 11 years old. I remember couch surfing
as I thought it would be safer than being
on the streets but remember older people
exploiting me that I was staying with."

"Since getting my place with
Brisbane Youth Service I am in
a safer environment and no
longer subject to abuse,
I have my own space."
